Frequently Asked Questions

26 Years. The company was established in 1998. We have focused primarily on basement finishing for the last 12 years. Before that, in addition to basement finishing we also renovated apartments, built 9 custom homes and remodeled numerous homes. Our primary service area has always been the Wasatch Front and surrounding communities.

The typical basement takes 10 to 12 weeks to finish. If you include additional features like a kitchen or theater room this will add a few weeks to completion time.

We start basements once the city issues a building permit. This process typically takes 3-4 weeks.

The two most common upgrades are Kitchenettes and laundry connections. These are very helpful if you are considering using your basement as an income generation source through rental.

A typical 3 cabinet kitchenette with 2 floating shelves, all plumbing, electrical and standard grade granite countertops is $3,500 to $5,000.

Laundry connections are $1,050 for all plumbing, electrical and venting required by city code.

Other common upgrades include 2 or three tone painting. Theater rooms. Home Gyms. Exterior entrances. Fireplaces. Custom finish work.

Yes!

A follow-up question that we’re often asked is: “Should I use a licensed and insured general contractor?” Again, the answer is yes.

What do you benefit from using a licensed and insured contractor?

  • Safety: All licensed contractors are required to obtain building permits for home improvement projects and conduct all city-required safety inspections. We have seen so many examples of unlicensed work that is not just poor quality but often dangerous.
  • Money Security: We’ve all heard the horror stories of “contractors” running off with the down payment for a home project, to never be heard from again. The “contractor” in this story is not licensed they are an unlicensed amateur. If a licensed professional were to pull this stunt you could find them in 5 minutes. The state would revoke their license and you’d be covered by the bond all licensed general contractors are required to have. This will not happen if you use a licensed professional.
Yes. Every home improvement project done in the state of Utah is required to have a building permit.

Don’t they cost a lot of money? Not really. The typical cost is less than $500.

They’ll make my taxes go up? Maybe, but that is not the case for most of our clients and is certainly not the case for our company owners who own rental properties with finished basements.

What are the benefits of a basement building permit?

  • Safety: everything is inspected by the city for your safety.
  • Insurance compliance: if you submit an insurance claim on a basement finish that was not permitted there is a very good chance the claim will be denied.
  • Resale value of your home: Often you are unable to count the finished square footage of a basement finish that did not receive a building permit. So you get no return on your investment.
  • 30% Payment when we start the basement project.
  • 30% payment when we pass the 4-way inspection from the city.
  • 30% Payment when we start painting the basement.
  • 10% Payment when we pass the final inspection from the city and do a final walk-through with you.

Yes! it is a comprehensive 2-year warranty that covers any defects that make spring up during that time.

This is rare. The most common warranty work we do is in conjunction with drywall screws “popping” out of walls. This is a simple fix that takes less than an hour.
